| February 26, 2007 - I updated my fish and plant profiles to reflect my current inventory. I still have more pictures to put up. |
April 24th, 2005 -
It's been a really good month. Tank is finally under control from algae.
Growth continues to be superb. Many plants that I had simply cut to the base
(due to algae) are actually starting to regrow. The fish seem to really like the density
but I have to keep it under control as too many surface plants seem to make it difficult for
them when feeding time comes. I've also planted microswords along the front now that I have
the extra lighting. But they seem a little slow in grow. We'll have to wait and see what
they will do.

March 23rd, 2005 -
Well, I've had a long battle with algae. Now the tank is on a strong recovery.
I had to trim out many of my plants due to the algae. I've just recently added
pressurized CO2 and upgraded my lighting. Part of my problem was that my tank
was lacking in these two areas. What a difference it has made since I've added
these two! Also, we found out that the blinds from our window was letter in light
into the tank. This was another source of my problems. I never noticed for a year!

December 22nd, 2004 -
Wow! It's been a while since my last update. I haven't had much time to spend on the tank.
Actually, I was even neglecting feeding my fish. I think a few became meals and now some of
the fish resorted to making my plants a salad buffet! Things are starting to look better but
I've got some work to do on this tank to get it back in motion. Guess that's what winters
are for... |
April 26th, 2004 - Well, I've been battling algae
for the past month or so. I've had ever kind of algae. The worst at one
point was the brown algae all over my substrate and glass. I introduced
a Pleco to help my 3 SAEs. He dealt with the brown stuff in no time. Unfortunately,
I didn't provide any nutrients to my plants and that was a problem. My growth
got stagnant and green spotted algae formed EVERYWHERE! Now I've introduced
5 Ottos and started the dosing of nutrients (Flourish, Flourish Excel &
Flourish Iron). Hopefully this stops the green algae infestation!!! |
March 26th, 2004 - It's getting harder and harder to keep the tank the way I want it. Plants want to keep growing! The Green dwarf hygrophila is growing like mad! Very easy to propagate. Just snip and re-plant! The only problem is I don't really want a tank of just this stuff. So for the first time, I had to throw some plants out. I was worried my Jungle Val wasn't gonna grow but now it's very healthy. I've got some that are probably 4' long! One thing I tried today is snipping a base leaf off a banana plant near the rhizome. I cut two. One I planted right into the substrate and the other I left floating. We'll see what happens. I would like to be able to propagate these as they are very cool plants!

March 7th, 2004 - All going well. Just started
to trim the plants. Noticed a small level of nitrite but all within expectation
for the startup of this tank. I also started trimming some plants as they
were hitting the top of the tank already!!! The banana plant has its first
leaf touching the top of the water too! |
March 1st, 2004 - The tank is just a little over 2 weeks old now. I'm very happy with the results. I added a couple of banana plants and the Ludwigia repens in the left-hand corner. Now that I'm learning these various plants, I moved a few around to allow better arrangement based on their growth. Ohh and I pulled up my Anubias plants as they were planted too deep. And finally I added a dozen Zebra Danios just over a week ago and 3 SAEs 2 days ago. I'm keeping an eye out for ammonia spikes but the plants are very happy with the added fish. All daily readings are zero!

February 15th, 2004 - My first planted aquarium! I have to admit that without the internet, it would have been pretty hard to do this tank as a newbie. There were soooo many things to consider when buying all the various components to make this work. (Well, I don't know if it's going to work yet!) In any event, it was a lot of fun and I can't wait to see my plants grow and add some fish!
